How to Increase Your Chances of Getting Pregnant

Getting pregnant is easy for many couples. Others have a more difficult time and may need to do some simple things to boost their chances. While there are fertility drugs and medications that your doctor can prescribe to increase your chances of getting pregnant, there are things you can try on your own first. Before you begin trying to conceive, however, you should talk to your doctor and have a complete checkup to make sure youre healthy enough to have a child.

    Maintain a healthy weight at all times. Maintaining a healthy weight is particularly important because being overweight or significantly underweight can affect hormone production and inhibit ovulation.

    Eat healthy foods. While there isnt a specific diet for women who want to get pregnant, eating a balanced, healthy diet is still important. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean sources of protein like chicken and fish and limit fatty, sugary and salty foods.

    Track ovulation using a calendar. Mark the day your period begins each month, as well as the day it ends. Youll probably notice a pattern emerging. Ovulation is most likely at the midway point of your monthly cycle.

    Check your basal body temperature with a basal body temperature thermometer when you wake up in the morning. Note your body temperature throughout the month on your ovulation calendar. After ovulation, your temperature is likely to rise from the usual 96 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit to between 97 and 99 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Have sex regularly throughout the month and once per day on days leading up to ovulation. Having sex frequently will improve your chance of becoming pregnant.

    Avoid tobacco and alcohol. Tobacco affects cervical mucus, which can prevent sperm from reaching fertile eggs. Alcohol may also affect your chances of getting pregnant. Once you are pregnant, both tobacco and alcohol are off limits.

    Exercise regularly, but not too much. Regular aerobic exercise while youre trying to conceive can promote fertility, but strenuous exercise like training for a marathon may negatively impact your chances of getting pregnant. Limit exercise to not more than seven hours per week.
